NatureYou start underground, at the cableway station in the middle of Zhangjiajie's city grid, and rise for thirty minutes over rooftops, then farmland, then a wall of sandstone that appears to have been cut with a blade. Most visitors spend that ride taking photographs. Your expert spends it explaining why this mountain looks nothing like the mountains an hour in any direction — and what that difference tells you about how South China was built. At the summit the path splits into two kinds of fear. The glass walkway asks you to trust engineering; the cliff-hugging Guigu path asks you to trust your own footing. We take both, slowly, and talk about the geology under your feet rather than the drop beside it. Then Heaven's Gate: a hole punched clean through the mountain, 131 metres high. It is the one place on this tour where the photograph everyone takes is genuinely the best way to understand the scale — so we stop, and take it, and then walk the 999 steps beneath it while your expert explains what the number is doing there. By the end of the session the mountain has stopped being scenery. It has become a structure you can read — and you will read every other Chinese mountain differently because of it. That is what the session buys: not a route walked, but a way of looking that stays with you after you come back down.
